Is White Chocolate Really Chocolate? The Truth Behind the Debate

Yes, white chocolate is chocolate. It’s made using cocoa butter, one of the key components of the cacao bean. However, unlike milk and dark chocolate, it doesn’t contain cocoa solids, which give traditional chocolate its brown colour and rich cocoa flavour. This difference is exactly why white chocolate has sparked so much debate over the years.

What Is White Chocolate Made From?

White chocolate is made from cocoa butter, sugar and milk solids and doesn’t contain cocoa solids unlike milk and dark chocolate do.

Cacao beans have two key components:

  • Cocoa butter - the natural fat that gives chocolate its smooth, creamy texture.
  • Cocoa solids - the part responsible for chocolate's colour and rich flavour.

Milk and dark chocolate use both components, while white chocolate uses cocoa butter alone.

Why Isn’t White Chocolate Brown?

White chocolate isn't brown because it doesn't contain cocoa solids, the part of the cacao bean responsible for chocolate's darker colour. Instead, it gets its pale appearance from cocoa butter, which is naturally ivory in colour.

It’s this difference that makes white chocolate such a talking point. For many people, chocolate is instantly associated with that deep brown colour and rich cocoa taste, so something pale and creamy can feel like a bit of a different category.

Was White Chocolate Created by Accident?

Well, kind of…

White chocolate first appeared in Switzerland as chocolatiers explored new ways to use excess cocoa butter from traditional chocolate production. The original idea was to create something practical using ingredients that were more accessible at the time.

So, it wasn’t created to challenge the classics, but once they discovered the result was a smooth, creamy and sweeter version of what was already out there, it quickly became some people’s new go-to.

Maybe sometimes, the best creations are the ones we don’t quite expect.

White Choc Has a Seat at Our Table

White chocolate has always been a key part of our chocolate range; it brings something different, and that’s exactly why we love it.

Its smooth, creamy texture and naturally sweet flavour create a completely unique chocolate experience. It’s indulgent, versatile and pairs beautifully with flavours that complement its softer profile, like matcha.

But, as always, we like to put our own twist on things. Our White Chocolate Blend takes that familiar creamy flavour and adds a coconut twist, using Peruvian cocoa butter and coconut milk powder for a smooth drink with a subtly sweet finish.

So yes, white chocolate is chocolate. It’s just a different style - and that’s something worth celebrating!
