The Art of Drinking Chocolate: Past, Present and Pure Comfort

The Sacred Origins of Cacao

Cacao trees first grew in the tropical rainforests of Ancient Mesoamerica, where the beans were considered a gift from the Gods. The Aztec and Mayan tribes wove cacao into their daily and spiritual lives. It appeared in sacred ceremonies, symbolised life and fertility, and was served to rulers and warriors as a frothy, bitter, spiced drink called xocoatl (sho-KWA-til).

For centuries, cacao remained a sacred and powerful substance, but when it reached Europe in the 16th century, it was transformed. Bitter became sweet, ritual became pleasure, and a sacred elixir became the comforting cup of hot chocolate we know and love today.

Our Chocolate Journey

The Blendsmiths chocolate range varies in flavour, but every blend is crafted to make a memorable cup. It all began with our Original Chocolate. Ryan, already an avid hot-choc drinker, found cacao familiar from his years in the speciality coffee world since both ingredients follow similar processing steps. We Dutch-process our cocoa, which alkalises the beans to create a smoother, richer, slightly sweeter profile. Giving our drinking chocolate its velvety, comforting character.

Cacao vs. cocoawhat’s the difference?

Cacao refers to raw, unroasted beans, while cocoa is harvested the same way, but roasted at higher temperatures, which sweetens the flavour.

Understanding this difference helps explain why drinking chocolate tastes the way it does. From the very first pour of xocoatl to modern-day sips, the journey of the bean shapes every cup. Once the beans are processed, it’s all about ratios, texture, and the way chocolate melts into your milk. It’s a ritual that connects us across time, and that’s the magic of hot chocolate.

Beyond its long, fascinating history, it remains the ultimate comfort drink. Shared with kids, whisked on the stove, dressed up with marshmallows or sipped simply. It’s nostalgic, warm, and endlessly customisable. Bringing you a little moment of warmth and joy whenever you need it.
